Kelsey led two professional organizations of national importance. As secretary of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), he had helped inaugurate new branches in western states and testified before Congress to promote the protection of archaeological sites in the Southwest. In 1907 he became president of both the American Philological Association and AIA; the latter expanded dramatically during his five-year tenure.
