Dioscorides’ On Materia Medica consists of five books arranged in three broad categories: animals, minerals, and plants. The plants are subsequently divided into the following sub-categories: roots, pot herbs, fruits, trees, and shrubs. The subcategories are further divided into chapters according to associations or similarities based on botanical form, mode of extraction, drug purpose, and medical treatment.
