The opening of this exhibit, both in the physical and online versions, and the publication of this catalogue happily coincide with bicentennial celebrations at the University of Michigan in 2017. As a modest contribution to this milestone commemoration, this section, “The Collectors and the Bicentennial,” includes overviews of the lives and research interests of three eminent scholars: Le Roy Crummer, Lewis Stephen Pilcher, and Campbell Bonner. Their research and bequests planted the seeds of our history of medicine collections. And indeed, the reader will also learn how their lives were intimately connected to the early history of the University of Michigan.
