This watercolor facsimile is a replica of a mural found in a house at the town of Karanis (C65), Egypt. At Karanis, the cult of Harpocrates, which is the Greek rendering of the Egyptian god Horus, was very popular, especially throughout the Roman period. Harpocrates was the protector of children and he was also linked to the fertility of the land. He often appears along with Serapis and Isis.
