KM 92427: Faience Ushabti

The ushabti is a small human-like figure frequently found in Egyptian burials. Its purpose was to act as a servant for the deceased in the afterlife. Ushabtis often came in many different shapes and sizes. It was not unusual for a person to be buried with hundreds of these figurines, but Sarapous, the deceased girl, only had one. This is uncommon, and may either be due to her modest burial or to later robbing of the grave. We will never know exactly why only one ushabti was found.
**Please note: this "assemblage" was created solely for educational purposes. While all of the objects discussed here were excavated at the site of Terenouthis, it must be emphasized that they were not found in a single tomb.
