Fibula

KM 91835: Bronze Fibula
from Italy
Gift of Dr. E. S. McCartney

This ancient 'safety pin' type implement would be placed at an individual's shoulder and used to fasten the garment known as the stola - a long single piece of cloth. The fibula was ornately fashioned from bronze and displayed a pattern of linear designs along the bowed section. This was a common and necessary piece of adornment in Roman times and very likely was worn on a regular basis by this woman, as she wore it in death.
