Terra sigillata, the red ceramic ware of which this bowl is an example, was a fairly common type of pottery in the Roman world, being exported all over the Mediterranean Sea and beyond. Note the stamp in the vessel's interior, which may give the name of the potter who made the bowl that ended up in Valeria Callityche's grave.
