No one ever drank from this Japanese Karatsu ware porcelain bowl. The potter carefully applied an iron-oxide design to the vessel exterior and covered it with a thin glaze before placing it in the kiln. However, the sides of the bowl collapsed during firing, folding in over the base and rendering the vessel unusable.
