Figure of Bes

Papyrus

Figure of Bes Faience 44 x 38 x 73 mm 1st–3rd c. AD Karanis, Egypt University of Michigan Excavations. KM 25979

The Egyptian god Bes was one of the most popular divinities at the town of Karanis. Like other deities, his main role was to avert evil influences, including illnesses. More specifically, he was supposed to protect children and women in childbirth. The small size of this figure suggests its role as a portable amulet.
