The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 buried Oplontis in volcanic debris to a depth of 8.5 meters, or 28 feet. The painting and molded stucco fragments shown here and on the next page are displayed in volcanic pumice to suggest the conditions of their burial in AD 79.
