THE CASCADE AT THE CITY GATE
A series of basins and waterfalls formed an ornamental cascade of about 90 meters in length, which flowed in an open channel down the center of the main street to a semicircular fountain just inside the City Gate. This impressive aquatic display was much like the one at the city of Perge on the southern coast of Turkey, which flowed from a monumental nymphaeum down the center of the main street toward the city gate. Antioch’s cascade probably also issued from a nymphaeum, but no traces of it have yet been discovered.
