THE CHURCH OF ST. PAUL
In the 4th century AD, the Church of St. Paul was the seat of the bishop
of Antioch. As the most important church in the city and one of the largest
in Asia Minor, the basilica is fittingly placed where it can be seen from
the main road leading to Antioch and from every high point in the city.
The lavish 4th-century mosaic in the nave of the church is dotted with
inscriptions, some that name donors and others that cite biblical verse.
Access to one section of the mosaic, the solea at the eastern end of the
nave, was probably reserved for clergy performing rituals.
