Pot and lid were not discovered together at Karanis, nor do they 'fit' together. They are, however, good examples of the kind of plain cookware that would have been used in daily household life. The pot was made on a wheel from a coarse reddish-brown clay covered with some type of Egyptian red slip. Kilns for 'firing' ceramics were found at Karanis, suggesting these pots were made locally, and produced in great numbers.
