KM 7142/ African Red Slip bowl

KM 20198/ Coarseware jug
3rd-4th century AD
Karanis, Egypt
The bowl, which has a roulette design inside, is an import to Karanis, coming from production centers further west on the North African coast. African red-slip ware was considered 'finer' tableware in most Karanis households, and perhaps in some households would only have been used on special occasions. By contrast, the coarser jugs were made locally and used frequently, probably for transporting, storing and serving liquids.
